I am truly grateful for the extraordinary journalists I've worked with, and grateful for the significant response of the audiences that have been challenged by the reporting we've done. In order for audiences to care as deeply as they are capable of caring, we have to do more than document - our reporting must be experiential, credible and profoundly personal.

MISSION MOSUL: The 27th in Iraq - The Richmond Times-Dispatch had the only reporter + photographer at the US base in Mosul the day a suicide bomber entered the mess tent. This is the cover of a special section produced by the RTD following our breaking news report that published when the event took place. The exceptional work of the paper's 2-person team was used by all major television, online and print news outlets during the weeks that followed.

RICHMOND BALLET IN NYC - Rough layout I did for the Richmond Times-Dispatch's story identifying the dancers invited to New York. Portraits were shot as informal glimpses into who the dancers are, rather than what they do.

NEW HOPE - The page above and the 2 pages below are my proposed layout for The Roanoke Times' story about one of the "last hope" centers for foster kids. This group home was wonderful for these children - they thrived here under the loving care of a devoted staff. Photographer Sam Dean could not show any full faces. He did an amazing job of getting to the heart of this story without compromising his subjects.

THE PEOPLE'S POPE - One of my proposed layouts for the Richmond Times-Dispatch's A1 coverage of Pope John Paul's life and death. I loved the quote by Southern Baptist evangelist Billy Graham.

LIFE LESSONS - The merging of Armstrong + Kennedy High Schools was potentially explosive - two low income, rival neighborhoods with a history of violence toward each other were joining. The Superintendent of Richmond City Schools agreed to a no-holds-barred coverage of this experience. The students themselves ended up being the heroes of the story.
